- The fastest spike ever recorded in volleyball was by Matey Kaziyski of Bulgaria. He spiked the ball at an incredible speed of 132 KM/H (82 MPH). - Did you know that the scoring system used to Be different in volleyball? Prior to 1999, volleyball used a ‘side-out scoring system’ meaning only the serving team could score points. The change to ‘rally scoring’ where both teams can score sped up the game and made it more exciting for spectators.
- It is interesting to know that beach volleyball was inspired by the indoor version of the sport. Beach volleyball originated from indoor volleyball, with the first beach volleyball games played on the sandy beaches of Santa Monica, California (The USA,) in the 1920s.
- Did you know that you can legally kick the ball in volleyball? While volleyball is primarily a hand-based sport, players are allowed to hit the ball with any part of their body, including their feet. This rule comes in handy when the ball is too low to reach with hands alone.
- There’s no doubt that volleyball is a game of quick reflexes. On average, professional volleyball players react to the ball in less than 0.3 seconds after it’s served or hit. This makes it one of the fastest-reacting sports, needing top-notch reflexes.
- The first-ever beach volleyball world championship was held in Brazil. The inaugural Beach Volleyball World Championships took place in 1987 on the famous beaches of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and beach volleyball has continued to grow in popularity since.
- The most hardest position to master in volleyball is considered to be the setter. The setter is often referred to as the “quarterback” of the team, responsible for delivering precise passes to hitters. A great setter can dictate the entire flow of the match, making this position challenging yet crucial.
- There’s a world record for the largest volleyball tournament organized by a particular volleyball federation. The Guinness World Record for the largest volleyball tournament goes to the Estonian Volleyball Federation. They organized an event with over 10000 participants in 2012!
- The sand on the Olympic beach volleyball courts are heated. In the Olympics and other major beach volleyball tournaments, the sand is heated to a temperature that ensures it’s comfortable to play on, avoiding any injuries caused by overly hot or cold sand.
- Did you know that volleyball has its own world cup? While many people know about volleyball in the Olympics, there is also a Volleyball World Cup held every four years. It’s a major international competition, and the top teams from this tournament often qualify for the following Olympics.
