Volleyball is one of the team sports that has world wide popularity. Particularly, the sport has reached almost all countries of the world thanks to Olympic volleyball games and various volleyball world championships. Like every team sport, each member of a volleyball team gets to contribute for winning a match.
The major reason for the popularity of volleyball is the fact that it is relatively easy to get started playing and all you need is two teams, knowledge on the basic rules and some regular equipments.
Both men’s and women’s volleyball is fast-paced in nature and that makes the sport exciting to watch. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at some of the interesting facts about men’s volleyball.

Interesting Facts About Men’s Volleyball for Beginner Players
- In 1964, volleyball was first introduced into the Olympic games and the first edition saw a three-way competition between the host nation Japan, Czechoslovakia and Russia (at the time known as the USSR) men’s volleyball teams. The tussle for the gold medal was fierce and at the end of the tournament, the host nation Japan won bronze, Czechoslovakia got silver and Russia went home with the all important gold medal.
- The longest set in men’s volleyball took place at the final of the 2006 volleyball world championship when Brazil and Italy battled it out for the gold medal. The set lasted for 2 hours and 37 minutes. At the end of the match, Brazil won the title with a pretty close score margin of 73 to 71.
- A time limit of 8 seconds is set for both men’s and women’s volleyball players to serve the ball. If a player fails to serve the ball within the time limit, a point will be awarded to the opponent team and the serve turn for that particular player will be forfeited.
- In 2005, America’s Karch Kiraly won the AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) tour title at the age of 44, thereby becoming the first oldest men’s volleyball player to secure this prestigious achievement. Karch Kiraly along with Mike Lambert, won this particular title in beach volleyball.
- Karch Kiraly is the only player to hold the distinction of winning a gold medal playing for both indoor and beach volleyball teams.
- In 1996, the beach volleyball tournament was broadcasted for the very first time and close to 1billion people watched it. The men’s edition of the tournament for that particular year was won by Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes of USA.
- Farhad Zarif is the shortest volleyball player and he plays for the Iran national men’s volleyball team. He joined the national team in 2006 and was awarded the best Libero award for 7 consecutive years. Zarif won it from 2006 to 2013.
- The fastest serve in men’s volleyball was performed by Wilfredo Leon of Poland. The serve clocked at 138MPH.
- Karch Kiraly is one of the men’s volleyball players being chosen by the international volleyball federation as the player of the century.
- The most number of aces served in a volleyball match is by Samuel Walker of Australia. He served 7 aces against Brazil when he played in Poland and they are one of the top teams in men’s volleyball.

Why is Karch Kiraly Considered to be One of the Top Players in American Men’s Volleyball History?
Karch Kiraly is considered to be one of the top players in American men’s volleyball history due to the fact that he is the only player to have won the Olympic gold medals playing in both indoor and beach volleyball teams. He won the indoor volleyball Olympic gold medal in 1985 leading the USA volleyball team. 11 years later, he won the Olympic gold medal in 1996.
The interesting aspect is that no player managed to achieve this feet before him.
What’s One Interesting Fact on Men’s Volleyball that You Enjoyed Reading About?
There are so many but one fact that stands out for me is Brazil’s 3 consecutive victories in the volleyball world championship. They won it in 2002, 2006 and 2010. A pretty awesome record! Isn’t it?
What’s One Fact that You Particularly Like from This List?
All these facts are pretty awesome in my opinion but if there’s one that I need to pick from this list that I like the most, then it’d definitely be the longest set played by Italy and Brazil at the 2006 men’s volleyball world championship. To play the set for that much longer, shows that players from both the teams cared deeply about winning the title.
