- Did you know that you Can Play Volleyball in the Snow? Snow volleyball is a recognized variant of the sport. It’s played on a snow court with similar rules to beach volleyball. The Confederation of European Volleyball (CEV) even hosts official snow volleyball tournaments!
- A ‘triple crown’ in volleyball refers and recognizes a player achieving 10 or more in three statistical categories in a single match namely kills, blocks and digs. This is a special term used specifically to volleyball.
- The longest volleyball rally as of writing this post took place during a professional match in South Korea, lasting 132 seconds and involving 256 touches before a point was scored. That must’ve been an exhilarating and exciting rally for sure!
- Volleyball has its Own Slang. Players often use unique terms such as ‘pancake’ when a player dives and slides their hand under the ball just before it hits the ground, and ‘roof’ when a blocker completely shuts down a spike, sending the ball straight down into the opponent court.
- The Volleyball Net Height isn’t the same for every competition. Different leagues, age groups and even recreational volleyball matches can have varied net heights, making it more accessible for everyone involved in it.
- Did you know that you Can Score with a Serve Alone in volleyball? Known as an ‘ace,’ a player can score a point directly from a serve if the opposing team cannot return the ball and it hits the floor in their playing area.
- Beach volleyball courts use a specific type of sand that’s softer and less compact than the regular sand. This makes it less likely for players to get injured when diving or falling during play.
- The ‘Libero’ Position Was Introduced in the Late 1990s, and it is a defensive specialist who cannot attack the ball above the net or serve. This particular player position was introduced to make volleyball matches more exciting, and the major reasons were to enhance defensive plays and extend rallies.
- Volleyball has interesting terms and language associated with it. Terms like ‘joust’ when two players from opposing teams jump simultaneously to block and spike the ball at the net, and ‘wipe’ when a hitter deliberately aims the ball to ricochet off the blocker’s hands and out of bounds are unique to the sport.
- Did you know that there’s a ‘No-Look Play’ in volleyball? Some advanced players can perform what’s called a ‘No-Look’ spike or pass, where they hit or pass the ball without looking in the direction it’s going. This skillful move is meant to deceive the opposing team and score a point.
