Volleyball is one of the popular team sports and like most others, it has a significant global reach.
Before the international governing body introducing the volleyball world cup in 1965, the sport had 2 premier events namely Olympic volleyball games and volleyball world championships. In 1965, the first men’s edition of the volleyball world cup took place and in 1973, the first women’s volleyball world cup was organized by the international volleyball governing body.
Volleyball world cup takes place between a gap of every 4 years and since 1977, the tournament is being conducted specifically in Japan for both men’s and women’s national volleyball teams.

Interesting Facts About Volleyball World Cup for Beginner Players
- Russia and Brazil are the most successful teams in men’s volleyball world cup tournaments. Russia won the volleyball world cup gold medal for 4 times and on the other hand, Brazil won it for 3 times.
- In the women’s volleyball world cup history at the time of writing this post, China and Cuba are the dominant forces. They won the women’s world cup gold medals for 5 and 4 times respectively.
- Unlike the other team sport based world cup tournaments, the volleyball world cup doesn’t have a knockout phase. Instead, it is conducted completely in round-robin method. The 12 national volleyball teams that are participating will be divided into 2 pools and a team must play 11 intra/inter-pool matches over a 2 week period. The team with highest points will be awarded the world cup tournament title for that particular edition and both the winning and runner up teams will be automatically qualified for the next Olympic games.
- The USA won its first volleyball world cup tournament in 1985 beating the previous edition champion Russia. Karch Kiraly- was the captain of the USA volleyball team at the time of winning the competition.
- Brazil won the 2003 volleyball world cup tournament undefeated and the interesting aspect is that they won the volleyball world championship in 2002 and they were considered the favorite team to win this one as well. In the history of men’s volleyball world cup tournament, this is the first time a team finished the round-robin undefeated to win it for that particular year.

The most interesting fact for me from this list is the 2003 volleyball world cup victory by Brazil as the world champions. To win the 11 round-robin matches without undefeated is simply an amazing record and to do it for the first time makes it that much more special.

I do know the original name for the sport was “mignonette”. Do you know why it got changed?
